One of the most well known rare silver coins is the 1804 Dollar. A grand total of 15 specimens are thought to exist in the entire world. The archives from the U.S. Mint show that 19,570 silver dollars were delivered in 1804, however many historians believe that these were leftover coins bearing the date of 1803. The first 1804 silver dollars were thought to be struck in 1834, as the State Department had ordered a special set of coins to be used for diplomatic purposes.
The 1804 Silver Dollar currently hold the world record for the most expensive coin ever sold at a public auction. An unknown collector purchased the 1804 silver dollar for a whopping $4,140,000.00 at an auction in 1999.
